They say some of the company's T-shirts degrade women and point to shirts with sayings such as Who needs brains when you have these or I had a nightmare I was a brunette as examples. Sixteen-year-old Yagmur Muftuoglu, a junior at Gateway High School in Monroeville, says the attitudes represented in the shirts are too common in today's schools. She says girls spend too much time on comparing looks and putting each other down and not enough time on learning. Calls to the clothier's headquarters in New Albany, Ohio, were not immediately returned. The youths are part of a group known as Allegheny County Girls as Grantmakers, which will award ten-thousand dollars this year for youth projects involving women in politics, science and technology, and on the topics of bullying and stereotyping among girls. Abercrombie officials have apparently taken notice of the national girlcott. A company spokesperson has recently contacted the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania, the group sponsoring the girlcott, with an agreement to pull several of the offensive T-shirts from the shelves. The group claims to be pleased with the resolution.

Simple name branding letters and numbers splayed across the front --- as most popular casual brands are doing --- are geared toward the image-conscious teen females who desire to stay on top of the famous brands of the day. Also unique to the girls shirts are more ethereal graphics, daintier, script-letter fonts and the cut of sleeves, necks and bottoms. Like its competitor -- Abercrombie and Fitch -- the athletic and logo graphics gear toward New York and east coast. Aeropostale also carries an extensive color array of camis and polos.

Abercrombie and Fitch offers its female customers similar clothing in both its regular and kid's stores. Styles are in keeping with the casual way of life offering girls their slim-fit, 26-inch-long, hip or short-crop lengths. Its name-brand logo vintage-wash and super-soft T-shirts are best-sellers along with a smaller, dressy-casual line which also favors the same lengths and necklines.
