True, this is outdated but it still speaks to me because I created my own as a child. Using index cards fashion pockets for the inside covers of all my books and inserted check out cards. I gave my friends library cards and they came over and borrowed books. I don't recall ever collecting any late fees.
I'm a librarian now, but when I worked as a shelver I overheard a grade-school aged girl exclaim to her mom: I think they stole this book from my school library! Their books have these little pockets in them too. Books that were acquired before the switch to automated checkout still had the pockets, but she obviously didn't have a clue what they were for. And this was at least seven years ago already.
