The most obvious way to measure your cat's weight is to weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the cat, and subtract the first value from the second. Easy. If your cat is not cooperative, a box or carrier can be used in the same way; subtract the empty weight from the cat and carrier weight to get a fairly accurate answer. Another good tip is to visit your veterinarian for weigh-ins. The veterinary scale platforms are large and usually accurate to a tenth of a pound (or kilogram). Most vets are happy to do this, but I recommend calling first to make sure and to ask what the best time would be. Keeping a record of weight loss or gains is important. Go to a supermarket and buy cat litter in 2, 5, 10, and 25 pound sacks, some combination that adds up to just a bit more than what you think you weigh. Check the true weight of the bags on one of the store scales. (If you have a cat, get the litter your cat likes. If not, get the old-fashioned kind and donate it to a local Humane Society animal shelter after you've discovered your weight.)

Monitor progress Keep a written log of food intake (including all treats), exercise, and weekly weight. Weigh your cat weekly on the same scale at the same time of day. (Weigh yourself holding the cat, then weigh just yourself and subtract the difference. This may not be highly accurate, so you may want to use the scale at a veterinarian's office or borrow a baby scale.) It is sometimes helpful to plot out this information (dates and weights) on a graph. Remember, you may hit 'plateaus' in which your cat seems stuck at a certain weight. This is common. Do not despair, but continue with the weight reduction program, making sure no one in the household is 'cheating.'
