Jungle Carpet Views
Heating: Basking light temperature should be 88-90 degrees, daytime ambient should not drop below 80. Nighttime ambient should not drop below 72 degrees. As the jungle carpet python is semi-arboreal, heat coming from the bottom of the tank may do little more than act as an aide for other heating units. Overhead heating accomplished through incandescent bulbs or ceramic heat emitters are the best choice. Have at least three thermometers so the temperature gradient in the tank can be easily figured out. One should be under the basking light, another in the cool end, and one in the highest point of the tank where the snake may occupy.
Jungle Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota cheynei) are one of the most strikingly beautiful species of python I have encountered. Exceptional specimens with electric yellows and velvet like black leave a lasting impression on herpers and non-herpers alike. In addition to their incredible beauty, Jungle Carpets are a very hardy species of Python that fairs well in captivity. The fact that Jungle Carpet Pythons are beautiful and easy to care for makes them a popular choice for both beginner and seasoned herpetoculturist.
When I first began amassing my collection of Jungle Carpets I began purchasing Jungles wherever I could find them. Most of these animals did not develop into the contrasting animals I had envisioned and others looked nice at around a year old only to dull quickly into muddy looking sub-adults and adults. These Jungle Carpets did not look like the ones I had seen in photos. After many disappointments I came to the conclusion that there had to be a better way, so I began intensely researching these beautiful creatures, trying to gather as much information on the natural history and history of these animals in the U.S. as I could. After lots of networking with old timers and up and comers it was evident that a number of lines or pedigrees if you will, consistently produced impressive animals, animals that I would love to possess in my own collection. The next logical step was of course to track down these lines and the breeders of them. I was essentially starting from scratch again.
Jungle Carpets are an incredibly beautiful, dynamic, and rewarding species to work with and they are the centerpiece of my collection for these reasons. After many years of working with Jungle Carpets, I still find myself drawn to them and would recommend them to anyone who enjoys herps, from novice to pro.
