The internal diameter of Australian PVC piping is a little different from the measurements that Doug gives, but using a tuner I found that Doug ’s measurements give a good approximation. Using his metric sizes on some 20mm pvc tubing I made a couple of quite passable and playable flutes. Herec’s how I did it. I made mine in the key of D – if you want to make one of a different key, try using Pete Koselt’s ‘Flutomatd’ t– just follow the link and set the desired key in the key selector at the bottom of his chart and you will have the necessary measurements

Hi Jerry, sure I will do. But I think I shall not be too ambitious but start with a PVC one first, at least if there are mistakes, I can easily start over at minimal cost. I donn’t know the price of aluminium tubes but I am sure they are a lot more expensive. By the way, I found on the internet a guy from South Africa that makes aluminium pipe flutes in different keys for pretty reasonable prices. Check ou "briarcliff lodge

Gray or white flutes: Although I use the white pvc pipe as my default pvc pipe for making flutes, I also offer the larger bore flutes (G through low Bb) in a gray pvc for + $10 to the listed prices above. The gray pvc is a commerical-grade pipe that I buy from out-of-state. It has a mirror-smooth bore,  is very round and concentric, and is also approved for household water pipe. The considerable higher cost of the pipe and my shipping expense accounts for the surcharge for flutes made from the gray pvc. The gray pvc has nearly identical dimensions to the white pvc pipe except that the gray pvc is softer and will scratch easier. I don't detect a significant difference in the tone or loudness of flutes made from the white or the gray pvc.  I provide a simple cloth bag to protect the polished surface of all of my flutes.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe flute or plumber's flute is a side-played flute. PVC pipe is inexpensive, widely available at home improvement stores, and easy to work with and is therefore ideal for making flutes. Finished flutes can be decorated and personalized with acrylic paints or stickers. These instructions are for a flute in the key of G and covers two octaves.
