Quarter round moulding can be used as a great, inexpensive way to dress up a baseboard. Or quarter round moulding can actually be used to help hold flooring down. For the most part, people install quarter round molding to add an aesthetic dimension to baseboards, turning an ordinary baseboard into extraordinary.

Quarter round moulding is the thin, rounded trim that sits at the bottom of your baseboard around the edges of a room, bridging and dressing up the line between the baseboard and the floor. If you look at it from the end, its shape is one-quarter of a circle (thus the name). Because of its curved shape, the pieces cannot run flush against each other at a 90-degree angle for corners, as is an option with flat wall trim. Instead, you will need to miter the corners, which is a relatively simple process.

If you have ever tried to fix up an old house, you might have noticed that most existing, molding joints are not made with a 45-degree miter cut, but instead the joint is something that we call p#x201C;coped.t#x201D; These joints are most common on the inside corners of interior walls and they derive their name from the coping saw, which is used to cut the wood. In a coped joint, one piece of moulding is square cut at a 90-degree angle and butted directly against the wall. The second piece is then cut in such a way that it curves around and fits directly into the contour of the first piece. This technique sounds and appears more difficult than it really is, but still it is better to learn coping with something like quarter round, which has a shape that is easy to work with.
