According to one of the film's producers, the horse wrangler who worked on Seabiscuit cast several horses to play Secretariat.[4] The film is based largely on William Nack's book Secretariat: The Making of a Champion. He was also a consultant for the film.[4] Part of the film was shot on location in both Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky for three weeks then moved to Louisiana to reproduce the Triple Crown infields at Evangeline Downs, located in Carencro, Louisiana.[5]

Film critic Andrew O'Hehir of Salon.com began some controversy by his review of the film writing that though he enjoyed the movie, that doesn't stop me from believing that in its totality ‘Secretariat’ is a work of creepy, half-hilarious master-race propaganda almost worthy of Leni Riefenstahl, and all the more effective because it presents as a family-friendly yarn about a nice lady and her horse.
