Teacher Sticker Views
The Hatch Act prohibits government employees from making political statements which includes bumper stickers supporting a candidate--so the premise of a government employee such as a teacher having free speech is incorrect to begin with. And no one can have the expectation that their place of employment is a platform for their every utterance. The school board had the right to fire her. This bumper sticker is incendiary. BUT, I happen to agree with the sentiment. I think too many kids are medicated, especially little boys, because their parents AND teachers don't care to deal with high spirits.
If a school, public or private, sees fit to fire a teacher over a bumper sticker on her car, then why not fire her for not having the particular type of car they'd prefer as well? If we just limit it to bumper stickers, maybe an employer should be able to fire someone for having one expressing their support of a football or basketball team that's a rival to the employer's favorite?
Understand one thing folks. Generally the child is placed on such drugs at the teachers insistence. It allows them a more manageable class and less disruptive behavior in the classroom. Parents are too often to oblige because they want their children to do well in school. That's why it's odd to see this teacher displaying a bumper sticker bashing something that her profession pushes on parents.
IMHO, the school was wrong for firing her over a dang bumper sticker. Can a high school really afford to lose a good teacher over something so trivial? And who is so bored that they needed to complain about it? I was never aware of what kind of car my teachers drove, let alone what bumper stickers they had on them.
