When transferring from a wheelchair to another chair, toilet or bed, practice what is known as a pivot transfer with the help of a therapist or nurse's aide before trying it yourself. If you're in a wheelchair, lock the wheels in place. Practice lifting yourself as upright as possible and onto the sliding board. Use your hands to grasp the front edge of the board for balance, and then shift your weight to take you in the direction you want to go. Hold down on each end of the slide board for added stability. Move your hands to the right or left again, then slide your body in the same direction, continuing the movement toward the object you're transferring to. Practice moving back and forth on the sliding board at least once or twice in each direction until you gain the confidence and upper body strength necessary for self-transfers.

After your amputation, you’ll be taught how to transfer safely. This means learning to move between two surfaces (such as bed and wheelchair). Safe transferring is crucial to prevent falls and protect your wound as it heals. The type of transfer you use will depend on your overall health and strength. Two types of transfers you may learn are slide board transfers and pivot transfers.
