Pelargonium (pronounced /ˌpɛlɑrˈɡoʊniəm/)[1] is a genus of flowering plants which includes about 200 species of perennials, succulents, and shrubs, commonly known as scented geraniums or storksbills. Confusingly, Geranium is the correct botanical name of a separate genus of related plants often called Cranesbills. Both Geranium and Pelargonium are genera in the Family Geraniaceae. Linnaeus originally included all the species in one genus, Geranium, but they were later separated into two genera by Charles L’Héritier in 1789. Gardeners sometimes refer to the members of Genus Pelargonium as pelargoniums in order to avoid the confusion, but the older common name geranium is still in regular use, and most garden 'geraniums' are in fact 'pelargoniums', as opposed to true geraniums or cranesbill.

Zonal geranium is a well-known garden plant that also makes an excellent flowering plant for the home. It bears thick, succulent branches and fragrant, roundish leaves, sometimes marked with a dark, horseshoe-shaped zone. The flowers are borne in rounded heads and come in shades of red, pink, lavender, white, and purple.

Geraniums have been a gardener's favorite for well over a century. The old-fashioned standard for beds, borders, and containers, geranium is still one of the most popular plants today. Traditional bedding types love hot weather and hold up well to dry conditions; many offer colorful foliage. Regal, also called Martha Washington, geraniums are more delicate-looking and do better in the cool conditions of spring and fall.
