Two years after Aladdin Disney released The Return of Jafar which is the weakest entry in the trilogy by far. Aladdin and Jasmine are now comfortable in the palace and genie returns from his trip around the world. It is important to note that Robin Williams does not voice the genie in this film as he and Disney had a falling out that I will get to later. Meanwhile, Iago digs his way out of the lamp and the cave of wonderers setting up a chance for Jafar to get his revenge. The set up is not bad but the heart of the film is gone. The best part by far is the transformation of Iago from Jafar’s minion to a relatable and genuinely good character. The ending is actually pretty meaningful from Iagos perspective and is as fit and ending for Jafar as any. This film served its purpose of setting up the Aladdin TV show that followed soon after. The show was cool but it is not really considered cannon. Return of Jafar isn’t terrible but gets nowhere near the original.
